How to Optimize E-commerce Website Ranking: Keyword Research

For e-commerce, Google is a gold mine. But, only if you know how to boost your site for e-commerce website ranking. As we all know, Google is one of today’s leading search engines.

How can you do so?

Let’s discuss how you can optimize your site for e-commerce website ranking on Google by keyword research.

Boost E-commerce Website Ranking on Google: Do Your Keyword Research

You need to know what keywords to check and what ones to ignore. It is necessary to find out the keywords that are most likely to convert. If you want to make sure that your site is optimized for search engines, you must determine your main keyword and also secondary keywords to associate your site with.

What do you do?

There are a number of ways you can go about doing this. I recommend using Google Adwords Keyword Tool. It provides you info on average monthly searches, cost per click, and competition for a given keyword.

As far as how I would go about doing keyword research, there are two methods that I use:

1. Manual Method

First, I will write down all the words or phrases that people might use when searching for my products and services. I will also think of similar phrases and lists of words that describe my products or services. 

Then, I will visit the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and see how many people might be searching for these words or phrases each month, as well as how much they may be willing to spend on a product or service. 

I might think people are searching for “cheap website design”, but if there are only 100 searches per month for this phrase, then it probably isn’t a very good keyword for me to target because it is not something that my potential customers are actively searching for. 

Instead of wasting my valuable time trying to rank for low-volume keywords, I would focus on higher volume keywords like “web design” or “web design prices”. How do you know if a keyword is a high volume? Just check the average monthly searches column in the results from the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. If the monthly searches listed in the tool are above 1000 per month. Then it is a good keyword to target because there is enough search volume in order for your site to gain some traction in the search engines results pages (SERPs).

2. Use a Keyword Research Tool

The second method that I use is called Long Tail Pro. This keyword research software ranks a keyword’s competitiveness by showing you related long-tail keywords along with their search volume.

Just as with the manual method, I would check out the average monthly searches column in order to target keywords with enough search volume in order to make my SEO efforts worthwhile. 

Once you have determined your main keyword, you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool or Long Tail Pro in order to find secondary keywords that are directly related or indirectly related to your main keyword. For example, if your main keyword is “cheap sunglasses”, you may want to include other words such as “cheap polarized sunglasses” or “cheap designer sunglasses” into your list of secondary keywords. This way, when someone searches Google for either of these phrases, your site will show up on their search results page.
