Nokia PureView 9 Lens Camera Review

The iconic cellphone brand Nokia makes waves again in the release of PureView. In this article, let’s check the Nokia 9 Pureview lens camera.

As we all know, Nokia slowed down a bit in the past years. Yet, the iconic brand is nowhere to stay. Nokia bounced back with a huge bang as it released the new Pureview 9. The phone has six cameras on its back!

Analyzing the PureView 9 Lens Camera

PureView’s back has five 12MP cameras and the sixth camera as a ToF. The five 12MP cameras sit behind f/1.8 Zeiss lenses. Moreover, three of those cameras are monochrome. Meanwhile, the other two are RGB. The sixth camera offers additional depth information. Additionally, you’ll also see a dual-tone LED flash at the back.

Let’s review the five 12MP cameras further. They have the same fixed focal length of 28mm. One thing that is unique with the Nokia 9 lens camera is it doesn’t brag with any fancy shooting modes. You won’t find any option for ultra-wide angle or telephoto. Why? PureView’s goal is to deliver brilliant image quality on par with an expensive camera.

The PureView delivers that goal by combining the images from all five 12MP cameras. Moreover, the phone sometimes gives multiple frames from each of those. Those cameras work as a team, matching the quality of a large sensor camera. Thus, the Nokia 9 promises incredible dynamic range and ultra-deep scene detection.

Video Recording

Indeed, the Nokia 9 lens camera has a strong potential in joining the big phone camera names in terms of photography. However, the video recording part of the camera is not as exciting. Yet, it covers the basics such as shooting 4K HDR videos at 30fps. But, the phone doesn’t offer optical image stabilization. Meanwhile, the digital one is only available when shooting in full HD.

Camera App

The only piece of custom software in the PureView is the camera app. Fortunately, Nokia improved the app since the previous Nokia phones. However, the left side of the viewfinder is still overcrowded with various toggles.

From a long time ago up to this moment, the iPhone enables users to swipe between the shooting modes. Nokia tailored the PureView’s camera app like that. Listed below are the available modes:

  • Panorama
  • Square
  • Bokeh
  • Monochrome
  • Pro
  • Video
  • Slow-mo
  • time-lapse

Moreover, you’ll get many toggles on the opposite side of the shutter key while you’re in Photo mode.

In terms of night shots, this phone is not a match for any flagship phone. It lacks a Night Mode and relies purely on its frame-stacking and processing. Moreover, the default output’s quality is poor. The images are noisy with blown highlights and even the resolved detail doesn’t look good. Moreover, excessive sharpening further boosts the noise. At best, the final shots are average.

Selfies

The selfie camera is 20MP and does a very good job. The phone also offers Auto HDR which can enhance the quality of the selfie. Also, the colors are good and plenty of detail.
