Google & Yahoo – What’s the Difference?

Google & Yahoo are the most famous search engines. These two may seem identical. However, they have a lot of differences. Find those out here.

Yahoo!

Jerry Yang and David Filo founded Yahoo in January 2004. Yet, that is not the original name of the search engine. The founders first named it “Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web”. In 1995, the company changed the name to Yahoo.

Yahoo isn’t simply a search engine. Moreover, it is also an e-mail and communications service. For instance, Rocketmail in e-mail and Four11 in communications. Additionally, Yahoo bought Geocities. It allowed users and marketing experts in Arizona to create their own websites. Furthermore, Yahoo has other features such as Groups, Flickr, and Yahoo 360.

Google

Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google in 1997. Its original name is Backrub. It is currently the largest search engine with market shares. The original purpose of the founders is to have users search backlinks to determine the importance of a website.

Here’s a fun trivia: the founders wanted to name the site “Googol”. However, the name is patented therefore they can’t use it.

Furthermore, Google acquired media companies such as YouTube and Orkit to address the increasing needs of web browsers. Also, it is widely known for AdWords. In AdWords, Marketing Arizona companies sell advertisements with the use of several keywords.

Similarities of Google & Yahoo

Of course, the most obvious similarity between Google & Yahoo is the concept – being search engines. But not just that. Both founders of these two companies graduated from Stanford University. Furthermore, Google & Yahoo are California-based public companies. They both deal with Internet services and computer software.

Additionally, both companies offer instant messaging. They also give users unlimited storage of web searches and e-mails. Moreover, both have map features.

Differences Between Google & Yahoo

Yahoo provides news on its front page. Meanwhile, Google does not. It focuses on developing new tools. On the other hand, Yahoo strives to be a “one-stop destination”.

Google & Yahoo return different search results. That is because these two companies have different algorithms. Such algorithms automatically summarize web content. Moreover, these algorithms assume the meaning of a user’s search. Afterward, algorithms display the most appropriate content possible.

Search engines keep their algorithms secret as this is the most important aspect. Hence, we can notice very different results between these search engines.

A great thing about Yahoo is its Personals feature. Furthermore, the company has a job site named “Hot Jobs”. If you are seeking an internet marketing career, Hot Jobs is for you. Furthermore, the company has a Yahoo International Leg. It features articles and content related to the user’s country of origin.

Google offers tons of unique features, too. It has a desktop search and user-generated videos. YouTube and Google Video made those possible. If you are a book nerd, you’ll surely enjoy Google’s book search. You can also spot your home from your computer with Google Earth.

Finally, Google beats Yahoo in terms of revenue and net income. It beats Yahoo by 50% on those factors.
